Trademark watch for Etsy, Amazon and Shopify sellers

Updated October 18, 2026

For online sellers, the real risk is someone else registering a name like yours and then using it against your listings.

Why it matters more for sellers

  • Marketplaces act on registered trademarks. Amazon, Etsy and others accept infringement reports from trademark owners. If someone else registers a mark close to your brand, they can report your listings.
  • Brand programs need a trademark. Programs like Amazon Brand Registry are built around trademark filings. If a lookalike gets registered first, it can block or complicate yours.
  • Lookalike names are cheap to file. A US application starts at a few hundred dollars, and thousands are filed every day.

What to watch for

  • Your brand name with a letter changed, added or swapped
  • Your name combined with another word, like BRIGHTLEAF CO or BRIGHTLEAF HOME
  • Sound-alikes and translations
  • Filings for the same products you sell, or closely related ones

What to do when you spot one

Check the filing's goods and status. Note its publication date, since you have 30 days after publication to oppose. Talk to an attorney if it looks serious. Our guide on how to oppose a trademark covers the steps and fees.
